Retro Gaming 90’s- Doom 64: (1997)

When we think about high profile first-person shooter titles from the N64 era of gaming names such as: Goldeneye 007, Turok and Perfect Dark instantly comes to mind. The games just mentioned were all critically acclaimed and arguably paced the way for the rise in popularity of the first person shooter genre during the 00’s. As many people know the Doom series originated back in ’93 which was followed by a sequel entitled Doom 2 which came out in 1994. A few years following Doom II: Hell On Earth the world got to see the release of Doom 64 on the N64 in 1997. The fact that Doom 64 was exclusively in N64 added to its appeal since first person shooter games were not too popular on the PS1. Also, first party games within the Mario & Zelda series were among the biggest attractions for the N64 between ’96-’00. Despite, all the first party and other third party games Doom 64 had to compete with during the late 90’s it was still considered to be one of the best shooter games from that time period. The plot for Doom 64 was interesting because aside from having great visuals the plot followed the events from Doom II.

In Doom 64 players discover that Mother Demon has survived and managed to bring older destroyed creatures back to life. Players were able to get plenty of hours of gameplay out of Doom 64 since it featured 28 different levels. There were also at least four unlockable levels in Doom 64 along with the return of older weapons players were familiar with in Doom II. Also, everything about Doom 64 was impressive from its graphics to the gameplay along with the dark atmosphere the game presented. Even though, Doom 64 is not as iconic as the very first game from ’93 it was still popular enough to rival the likes of Turok: The Dinosaur Hunter in terms of popularity. In fact, Doom 64 was re-released for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows back in Spring 2020. Even though, first person shooters did not explode in popularity until the 00’s decade Doom 64 was still addictive to those who were huge fans of the genre during the late 90’s.
