Retro Gaming 00’s- Prince Of Persia: (2008)

When we think about big action adventure games from the late 00’s there are various titles that instantly come to mind such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassin’s Creed II, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots and others that are all considered to be classics. While the games just mentioned were all high profile titles during the late 00’s time period there were also others from the action-adventure that were almost as memorable. An example would be the Prince Of Persia game developed and published by Ubisoft which came out back in 2008. Prince of Persia was released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows in December 2008 and was a game that was mainly well received by both critics and fans alike. The story for the Prince Of Persia was very intriguing especially considering how the setting for the game revolves around divine concepts such as ancient gods along with the belief of Zoroastrianism. In this game players controls a nameless Wanderer called “Prince” after learning about the imprisonment of a dark god named Ahriman by Ormazd who is a god of light in the center of the city-state known as Persia.

It turns out that Ahriman was responsible for spreading corruption along conquering various countries around the world prior to a cosmic battle with Ormazd who was revealed to be his brother. Towards the beginning of the Prince Of Persia players soon discover that Elika and Mourning King are key characters within the game after they arrive in a forbidden mystical land sustained by the Tree of Life. Elika travels alongside Prince during his journey to heal the fertile grounds throughout the game he eventually learns some dark secrets regarding her past. It was revealed that Elika’s mother and the Mourning King’s wife had died shortly before she did herself. Unable to deal with the agony of losing his wife and daughter Mourning King had struck a deal with Ahriman. Mourning King had promised to free Ahriman from imprisonment in exchange for Elika’s resurrection which is exactly what had happened. After cleansing fertile lands sustained by the Tree Of Life both Prince and Elika proceed to purify a temple where they are opposed by the corrupted King and Ahriman. After both Mourning King and Ahriman are defeated Elika successfully manages to heal the Tree Of Life then sacrifices herself in order to seal the dark god away permanently. However, while Elika was alive Prince had grown attached to her leading him to undo the progress they made together by cutting the trees in the desert along with the Tree Of Life to bring her back to life. In the process the main antagonist and god of darkness Ahriman returns to life as well leaving players with a cliffhanger ending.

Even though, the plot for The Prince Of Persia seemed basic and lacked depth it was still very interesting and had pretty cool gameplay. Players had to complete their quest as Prince using aerobics, combat and puzzle solving solving skills as they traversed throughout various Persian areas within the game. Also, Elika’s magical abilities are very useful to Prince in this game because they can be used to keep him from dying and there is no limit on how many times she can do it. The open-world environment in Prince Of Persia looked magnificent thanks to the Anvil game engine which has been used a majority of Assassin’s Creed games since 2007. Since its release Prince Of Persia had managed to sell roughly around 2.2 million copies worldwide within two months. Ever since its release Prince Of Persia has been among the few action-adventure titles from ’08 that some gamers are still quite fond to this day. Despite, its level of success the game has not been remade or remastered for the PS4 or Xbox One since late-2008 and its something many people probably would not mind seton the near future.

Does Final Fantasy XIII deserve more credit?

When Final Fantasy XIII was released in 2008 by Square Enix many people who were fans of the series got something that was slightly different from previous games such as Final Fantasy XII or Final Fantasy VII in terms of gameplay.  The gameplay in Final Fantasy XIII part 1 did not give players the option to control other characters as they were only allowed to use the main character depending on what part of the game they were on.   Also, there were other features like the Crystarium level up system that many people complained about because it felt too much like the Sphere Grid from Final Fantasy X.  While many people had complaints about Final Fantasy XIII part 1 more people had seemed to enjoy part 2 even more.

The visual presentation and the cinematic cutscenes for Final Fantasy XIII were among the many defining features of the game.   Also, in terms of worldwide sales the first part of Final Fantasy XIII did great in terms of sales.  When Final Fantasy XIII was released for the PlayStation 3 it had managed to sell over 5 million units worldwide.  Not was Final Fantasy XIII successful on the PlayStation 3 but it also managed to sell over 3 million units worldwide for the Xbox 360 since its release.  While Final Fantasy XIII did include many interesting characters such as Lightning, Snow, Hope, Sarah, Noel Kriss and others the game is often regarded as one that stands about from other titles in the series.

Retro Gaming 00’s- Star Ocean: The Last Hope (2009)

Star Ocean the Last hope

When it comes down to JRPG games of the 00’s Star Ocean: The Last Hope was probably one of the most enjoyable role playing titles that one could play on consoles such as the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 in 2009.   One of the most interesting things about this game was the fact that the storyline took place before the original Star Ocean game which started back in the early 90’s.  This Sci-Fi themed game presents players an interesting storyline along with excellent gameplay which is easily the defining feature of this game.   The plot for this game was fascinating mainly because its setting is during the later part of this century.   Not only does Star Ocean: The Last Hope predict that there is going to be a World War 3 but also suggests that warring factions consisting of a world government known as the World Republic Federation and their global adversaries are going to be responsible for the destruction of the world.  Back when this game was first released in the late 00’s the plot may not have seemed as believable as it does right now.

Despite, how When it comes down to the in game fighting mechanics this game allows players to do almost anything they can think about.  The ability to utilize special attacks, chain combos and blindside attacks along with dodging made for great gameplay.  Also, the ability to utilize helpful items along with creating them is something that comes in handy in Star Ocean: The Last Hope.  While the gameplay for Star Ocean Last Hope great it would have been so much cooler if the game had featured some type of co-op mode to make it stand out.  However,  most JRPG titles are only single-player since players have too work on developing the members of their party along with the main character of the game Edge Maverick.

Star Ocean - The Last Hope International.jpg

Along with Edge Maverick players have the opportunity to have other characters in their party such as Lyme, Faize, Reimi and others.  The gameplay and the cinematic cutscenes for this game are both pretty cool..  Even though, this game did not sell quite as much as people thought i t would have Star Ocean: The Last Hope is an awesome JRPG game to own for anyone who is a true fan of that genre.

Retro Gaming- Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009)

When it comes down to action adventure games Batman: Arkham Asylum was definitely one of the coolest multiple console titles to have been released during the 00’s.  As many people know Batman: Arkham Asylum was developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by Eidos Interactive & Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment back in 2009.   When this game was first released there were various aspects about it from the storytelling to the visual quality was amazing. The story for this game focused on how Batman must stop the Joker from setting off bombs in Gotham City after he captures him and brings him the Arkham.  After taking the Joker to Arkham players learn that it was a trap that also involved Harley Quinn who breached Arkham’s security system and a crooked guard who worked there.  After learning about the disappearance of Commissioner Gordon along with the fact most of the Joker’s henchmen are stationed in Arkham Batman must stop the Joker by himself without no outside interference.

As player progress throughout the game they encounter some of the most popular villains in the DC universe including Bane, Scarecrow, Killer Crock, Poison and the Joker himself.  In terms of boss battles some people would argue that most of them were not too difficult.  However, when it comes down to the boss fight with Poison Ivy many people argue that she is more difficult than the Joker.  Not only does Ivy have two life bars but her henchmen are very annoying when you try to defeat her as Batman.  One of the many things that was impressive about this game was the  psychology that the Joker used to lure Batman into Arkham.  Those who watched the movie Batman: Dark Knight following its release in 08′ would probably make some minor comparisons between it and this game.   Even though, the plot was completely different the Joker had still proved to be a formidable adversary for Batman.

Also, the tactics the Joker used in this game felt somewhat similar to the ones that used in Dark Knight against Batman which made Arkham Asylum seem more interesting.    Shortly, after this game was released it sold over two million copies worldwide within a month.    Also, Batman: Arkham Asylum has sold over four million units worldwide since 2009.  Whether one decides to play this game on the PS3, Xbox 360 or any other console the quality of the game feels the same.  Batman: Arkham Asylum is generally regarded as one of the best action adventure games of the 00’s. Its sometimes debatable on whether or not it was better than its sequel Batman: Arkham City which was released in 2012.

Retro Gaming- Dragon Quest IX Sentinels Of The Starry Skies: (2009)

The mid to late 00’s was such a great time to be a fan of hand game consoles especially if one was into Nintendo DS.  While many people would argue that the handheld consoles of the early 00’s such as Game Boy Advance was far superior in terms of quality others would agree that the Nintendo DS had its share if good games as well.   When it came down to RPG titles for the Nintendo DS Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies was an enjoyable game.  Dragon Quest IX had a decent plot and  provided people with the option of multiplayer gameplay.   Those who decided to play Dragon Quest IX mostly on their own probably missed out on the multiplayer feature which may somewhat of a downer since it was one of the most exciting aspects of the game itself.  Along with having multiplayer gameplay people have the ability to customize their own hero along with playing throughout the game to discover the truth  about why their character lost all of their powers in the beginning.

When some people looked at Dragon Quest IX they were most likely impressed with how simple yet fun this game was.  Some people may argue that the gameplay in Dragon Quest IX was repetitive with seemingly outdated 32 bit graphics. However, those same qualities were among many things that made Dragon Quest IX unique especially if one lived through the 16 bit/32 bit era of gaming.  As cool as the story was for Dragon Quest IX was some people may have wondered what would the game have been like if it was made for the Nintendo Wii instead of the DS.  If Level 5 & Square Enix had decided the utilize 3D graphics for Dragon Quest IX would it have still been as successful? Those  who really loved Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS would consider the game itself a classic but they would probably question themselves on whether or not it deserves a high definition remake or not.

Classic Gaming- Tekken 6: (2007)

When Tekken 6 was released for home consoles such as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 worldwide in 2009 many people were excited about the game itself considering the fact that the prequel was released in 2004.  Many people would agree that Tekken 6 exceeded the expectations of many people because featured a fantastic scenario campaign mode that included 3D beat em up gameplay.  The inclusion of beat em up gameplay featured in the campaign mode felt similar to Tekken Force mode in Tekken 3.  Some people would agree that the inclusion of a scenario campaign mode was something that was lacking in Tekken 4 & 5 because it did a great job in terms of storytelling for Tekken 6.  The story for Tekken 6 was interesting because it focused on Jin Kazama’s rise to power as the head ot he Mishima Zaibasu along with Kazuya’s rise to power in a rival business known as the G Corporation.   While playing as Lars Alexandersson alongside with Alyssa Bosconovitch in a3D beat em up campaign mode players learn more about his past along with a plot twist near the end of the game.

When players confront Jin Kazama in campaign mode they discover that Alyssa was working as a spy since the beginning which was something that caught many people by surprise.  Defeating Alyssa was one of the hardest parts of the game along with fighting Azazel which would definitely take players several tries to complete.  Along with having a fantastic campaign mode Tekken 6 had a variety of different gameplay options including Arcade, Versus, training and team battle mode which players can get many hours of gameplay out of.  Many would agree that Tekken 6 was definitely one of the best fighting games that Bandai Namco Entertainment has ever made.  Also, some might argue that Tekken 6 was one of the best games within the series next to that of Tekken 3 due to the amount of offline content that it featured.   Along with having various game modes people got to play as many of their favorite characters including Jin Kazama, Nina Williams, Bryan Fury, Heihachi Mishima, Paul Phoenix, Julia Chang, Christie Monteiro and many others.  Tekken 6 was a game was not only impressive in terms of visual presentation and gameplay but it was also a title that had a high replay value because there was so much to do within the game itself. While there have been many great fighting games that were released during the 00’s some might argue that Tekken 6 was among the best next to the Soul Calibur series within that decade.

Wii Games- Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3: (2009)

Without a doubt Naruto was considered to be one of the most popular anime series to have been released worldwide during the 2000’s.  While the Naruto anime series was very popular the video games released for the Nintendo GameCube and the Wii were also really exciting for many people.  Out of most of the games released for the Nintendo Wii Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 is probably considered to be among the best.  Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 was developed by Eighting and published by Tomy prior to its Wii release in 2009.  Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 was a significant improvement from the prequel that was released in 2008.  Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 had included a roster of at least 40 playable characters and had around 19 different stages that would provide players with many hours of fun.  The story mode in Clash of Revolution 3 was exciting for some and frustrating for other people.  Even it one was a true Naruto fan the missions that one is expected to complete in story mode can seem impossible at times and requires trial and error to make progress in the game.

Along with having a story mode Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 had featured several other gameplay options including versus, tag team and online mode.  The tag team mode was very exciting because certain characters can execute special double team special moves when paired together such as Naruto & Jiraiya, Hinata & Neji Hyuga, Gaara & Rock Lee along with Sakura & Tsunade.  Rock Lee was especially fun to play as because he also have a tag team special with Might Guy which in someways makes up for the fact that he uses mostly Tai- Jitsu during battle.   The multiplayer mode was probably the most exciting feature of all since it allowed up to four players to battle against one another simultaneously with graphics and visual effects highly resembling that of the actual anime.  If one was not too skilled with using the Wii remote and nunchuck during gameplay they always at the option to play using a GameCube or Wii controller.  Even though, some people many not put Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja 3 above PlayStation’s Ultimate Ninja Storm series in terms of quality it was still a very good Naruto game for the Wii console with a replay value that was just as high.
