Was 2017 an awesome year for gaming?

When we think about awesome years within the gaming world throughout the 10’s decade there are quite a few that comes to mind. But one of the more memorable years that we have experienced during the 10’s decade without a doubt was 2017. While its debatable on whether or not 2017 was the best year for gaming within the 10’s decade there were definitely a ton positives from that time period in general. It was back in March 2017 that the world got to within the release of the Nintendo Switch along with Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. Since its release the Switch console had sold at least 52 million units worldwide and it was recently reported that it surpassed the SNES in sales. Also, The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild has become one of the most popular installments within the entire series and has reached at least 18 million units worldwide as it pertains in sales. During the second half 2017 we got to witness the release of Splatoon 2 and the critically acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey game for the Nintendo Switch which are both very popular to this day. While Splatoon 2 is considered to be a high profile third person shooter for the Switch console Super Mario Odyssey has went on to sell over 16 million copies worldwide.

In addition, to the Nintendo Switch becoming very successful the world also got see the release of the SNES Classic in late September 2017. In some electronic retail stores within America the SNES Classic was sold out before its official because pre-orders for the mini retro console were very high. The SNES Classic included various 16-bit gems that were considered to be legendary such as: Super Mario World, Legend Of Zelda: Link To The Past, F-Zero, Star Fox, Super Metroid, Earthbound, Mega Man X, Yoshi’s Island and more. Not only was the SNES Classic more popular than the NES Classic from 2016 but the console managed to reach over five million units in sales. Therem was no question that 2017 was great year for Nintendo financially along the fact the company received a ton of mainstream attention in general.

We also got to see the release of the Xbox One X back in 2017. The Xbox One X was backwards compatible with older generation titles from the Xbox One and the Xbox 360. It should also be noted that the Xbox One X was the first console that Microsoft had produced that ran games in 4K resolution. The Xbox One X was not only an updated model of the original Xbox One console but it was also designed to compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro which came out in November 2016. While pricing for the Xbox One X was more expensive than people would prefer some argue that its quality is more superior than that of the PS4 Pro. Not only did the Xbox One X provide 4K resolution gameplay but players had 1TB of hard drive storage at their disposal.

It was also during 2017 when the gaming world was introduced to one of the most popular online games of the 10’s decade known as Fortnite created by Epic Games. The third person survival-shooter game was initially released back in July 2017 and within a short period of time the game had over one million players. Fortnite was a game that utilized the Unreal Engine 4 and was released for multiple game systems such as the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. As contributions to the gaming world is concerned many people would credit Fortnite for making the Battle Royale concept popular over the past few years. We have seen various games utilize Battle Royale modes between 2017-2019 such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Call Of Duty: Black Ops IV and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. By the time we got to the Summer of 2018 Fortnite had at least 125 million players and in terms of revenue the game had generated at least $2.4 billion. Since its release Fortnite has remained popular at various eSports events and has received numerous awards from various different gaming entities under categories from “Best Multiplayer” to “Best ESports” game.

Speaking of online games it should also be noted that 2017 was also the same year that League Of Legends which was released in late ’09 flourished financially. As far as monetary gain is concerned it’s reported that Riot Games had earned $2.1 billion from League Of Legends during 2017 which was significantly more revenue than what it has generated during 2016, 2018 or 2019. League Of Legends seemed more popular in 2017 than any other year during the 10’s decade and Epic Games was doing some of its best business. There were so many big things within the gaming world that happened 2017 that it could possibly take days to highlight all of them. While everyone has their own respective opinions on which year of the 10’s decade was the best in relation to gaming many people would most likely put 2017 within the top five on their lists.

Retro Gaming 00’s- Guitar Hero: World Tour (2008)

When we think about popular music games that has appeared on multiple back in the late 00’s one of the few games that instantly comes to mind is Guitar Hero: World Tour from 2008. For those who do not know Guitar Hero: World was developed by Neversoft and published by Activision considered to be the direct sequel to the original installment which was released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2005. Similar to the original Guitar Hero game players were able to use a guitar-like controller. However, Guitar Hero: World Tour had included some additional accessories such as: microphone and drum based controllers which added to the overall realism and quality of the game. As far as features are concerned it seemed like Activision was doing whatever they could to compete with rival game Rock Band from ’07 with Guitar Hero: World Tour. In fact, Guitar Hero: World Tour had features such as the common score mechanic during multiplayer gameplay which was something that the first Rock Band game included.

In addition, to having an impressive in-game mechanics Guitar Hero: World Tour had an impressive single-player & multiplayer career mode. Being able to compete various musical objectives while running into boss battles and earning various awards in the form of money & customization items made for a solid and intriguing career mode. Another great feature that Guitar Hero: World Tour had was Battle Of The Bands mode which allowed up to four players in a band to compete against other teams online. While Guitar Hero: World Tour was a pretty fun game in general it’s debatable which version of the game was the best. Guitar Hero: World Tour had appeared on multiple game consoles such as PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows between 2008-2009.

Some might argue that the Wii version of Guitar Hero: World Tour was the most enjoyable given that players were able to utilize the Wii Remote & Nunchucks for drumming. Using the Wii Remote & Nunchucks in Guitar Hero: World Tour was something that players could do in the exclusive Mii Freestyle Mode on the Wii console. As far as quality is concerned in relation to visuals some would probably prefer the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 versions of the game. While its a bit surprising that Guitar Hero: World Tour was ported for the PlayStation 2 the console itself was still an attracts and more affordable during ’08 in comparison to that of PlayStation 3. While Guitar Hero: World Tour May not be the best entry in the series many people would probably place this game within top three for being the best installment within the entire series.

Retro Gaming 00’s- League Of Legends: (2009)

When we think about high profile video games to have appeared on Microsoft Windows during the 00’s decade League Of Legends from 2009 is one that instantly comes to mind. League Of Legends was developed and published by Riot Games and was a multiplayer online battle arena game that has generated an unbelievably large fanbase around the world since the game’s inception. The isometric gameplay coupled with 3D graphics and alluring visuals in League Of Legends were all qualities that captured the attention of many people who were PC gamers throughout the 10’s decade. Also, League Of Legends had various game modes including Co-op vs AI, Normal & Ranked Matchmaking and others that kept players busy and excited as they learned how to improve their skills. The champion concept within League Of Legends is unlike anything an average gamer will see in any video game. As far as quantity is concerned it was reported that as of the year 2020 League Of Legends has over 145 different champion types with multiple options how how different teams choose to battle them. One of the few things that is unique about League Of Legends is how much the game has evolved throughout the 10’s decade especially with the inclusion of special game modes that were around for a limited period of time between 2013-2016.

The level of popularity that League Of Legends has achieved within the past decade is unbelievable especially within the past couple of yeasts. On a monthly basis League Of Legends was averaging around 100 million active players back in 2016. We then fast-forward a few years later and learn from Riot Games that League Of Legends average at least eight million players per day which was revealed by the company back in September 2019. As far as monetary status is concerned League Of Legends has generated billions over the several years. One of the best years League Of Legends as it relates to revenue was ’17 when it generated approximately $2.1 billion. While League Of Legends did not earn as much annual revenue during ’18 or ’19 it still managed to generate at least one billion within each respective year. While League Of Legends reportedly earned $1.4 billion in revenue during 2018 Riot Games saw an increase the following year as the game generated $1.5 billion in 2019. In addition, to being one of the most popular online games of the 10’s decade League Of Legends is a title that is often featured at Esports events; League Of Legends has become a fan favorite in Esports competitions along with the likes of Overwatch, Rocket League and DOTA 2. While everyone had their opinions on what the best online game has been within the past decade or so its almost certain that many people would put League Of Legends within the top ten.

The Success of Fire Emblem Heroes!!!!

As many people know by now Fire Emblem Heroes is a mobile tactical RPG that has been popular on mobile devices since it initial release back in February 2017. While the spin-off game for Android & iOS Fire Emblem Heroes has definitely exceeded many people’s expectations in relation to how successful the game has become within the past three years. Its recently been revealed that Nintendo has earned over $1 billion in revenue as it pertains to mobile games with Fire Emblem Heroes being a large part of the company’s financial windfall. We have learned that Fire Emblem Heroes has grossed $500 million since its release in early 2017 and has surpassed the likes of Super Mario Run, Draglia Lost and other popular mobile games published by Nintendo between 2016-2019. Its quite interesting that a game like Fire Emblem Heroes has as much success as it did considering the fact that tactical role-playing games are not as popular today in comparison to Action-RPG’s. However, action role-playing games are generally popular on home consoles such as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch when docked.

While Fire Emblem Heroes is a very fun tactical role-playing its hard for many to believe in that the game would have much success on any other gaming device outside of the mobile category. However, Fire Emblem Heroes is still without a doubt one of if not the best mobile game that Nintendo had gave us during 10’s decade. The intriguing plot involving the warring nations of Askr & Embla along with the multiple expansion packs that was released between late 2017-late 2019 kept players interested in Fire Emblem Heroes. Based on how successful Fire Emblem Heroes has been within the past few years its probably safe to say that this game will still be on mobile devices for the next few years or so.

Duelyst confirmed to have its online severs shut down soon!!!

As far as big news within the gaming is world is concerned many people are talking about the recent announcement regarding Duelyst shutting down its online serves within the near future. For those who do not know Duelyst was made by indie video game developer Counterplay Games and was initially released for various computers devices back in 2016. Duelyst was a pretty unique tactical role-playing gameplay because it was a collectible card title with elements of turn-based gameplay. While Duelyst had appeared on iOS following its initial release it did not last long and was a game that ended becoming more popular on Microsoft Windows overall. Since its initial release the game had received at least six different expansions packs with the likes of “Denizens of Shim “Zar”, “Rise Of The Bloodborn”, “Ancient Bonds”, “Unearthed Prophecy”, “Immortal Vanguard” and “Trial Of Mythron” between 2016-2018. Seeing how the online servers for Duelyst is expected to shut down in February 2020 its possible that “Trial Of Mythron” will be the last expansion pack that we see for the tactical RPG.

In fact, its a guarantee that the “Trial Of Mythron” expansion pack from late-2018 will the last since Duelyst has reportedly seen a rapidly declining number of people playing the game itself. Considering the fact that Duelyst is a few years old along with the fact that card based role playing games are not too popular in this day and age it’s not too surprising that its servers are shutting down soon. Despite, Duelyst receiving mainly positive reviews from critics and players it was a game that was most likely overshadowed by the likes of Overwatch and Fornite between 2016-2017. While some people may have no problem with seeing some type of sequel for Duelyst Bandi Namco Entertainment has made no announcements regarding that possibility.

Stardew Valley reaches 10 million in sales!!!

One of the few things that had been making headlines within the gaming world as of late is the success of Stardew Valley. For those who do not know Stardew Valley is a farm simulation game that has released for multiple game systems since February 2016. In some ways people see Stardew Valley as a worthy competitor to the legendary Harvest Moon series especially since it looks similar to some of the older 2D installments that appeared on consoles such as SNES and Game Boy Advance. While Stardew Valley was a title that made headlines without the gaming world following its initial release nearly four years ago it has exceeded the expectations of many in relation to success. We have just learned that Stardew Valley has exceeded over 10 million copies sold since its initial release for consoles such as: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch along with mobile devices like Android & iOS. To some the success of Stardew Valley comes as no surprise especially coming the fact that the game itself feels like something that could possibly revitalize the farm-simulation genre of gaming.

While the original Harvest Moon game was considered to be very unique and innovative for Super Nintendo back in ’96 Stardew Valley felt like a more modern day version of that game which was something that was appealing. Fans of the 16-bit era of gaming along with those who cherish the farm-simulation genre of gaming believe that Concerned Ape’s game from 2016 was definitely one of the best indie titles of the 10’s decade. It will be interesting to see how popular Stardew Valley will remain throughout this year along with the first half of the 20’s decade since the game is only about four years old now.

New Tetris mobile app available for smartphones !!!!

As many people may have heard we will be getting a new mobile app for Android & iOS Tetris games that have recently disappeared online. It turns out that a mobile developer named N3work will be responsible for this new app which will allow people to access some of their favorite titles from the Tetris series. As it currently stands the new Tetris app is currently accessible through the App Store on mobile devices along with Google Play for those who are huge fans of the puzzle series. It turns out that this new Tetris mobile app is supposed to replace a couple of older apps developed by Electronic Arts which are all expected shut down this upcoming Spring in April 2020. While the new Tetris mobile app itself is free people can choose to pay $4.99 to eliminate video ads while enjoying their service. The news regarding Tetris new mobile app is one that has casted the series into the spotlight as of late along with the popularity of Tetris 99 from this past year.

The mobile app is just one thing that everybody is talking about right as it pertains to the Tetris series as a whole. Recently, there has been rumors swirling around that gaming developer N3twork has been working on a 100 player battle royale version of Tetris known as “Tetris Royale” which is expected to be released before the end of 2020. Hopefully, we will learn more information about these rumors as the year progresses but it will be interesting to see how popular this new Tetris mobile app will become throughout 2020. While Tetris 99 is still a unique attraction on the Nintendo Switch having an installment with a 100 person battle royale mode on mobile devices would be one that people would definitely love to see.
