When it comes down to retro arcade 3D arcade fighting titles Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat were arguably two of the biggest titles within that genre of gaming next to Tekken 3. While many people were finally excited to see a 3D Mortal Kombat game Soul Calibur 1 turned a lot of heads with its superb gameplay and its visual presentation. In fact, the original Soul Calibur is considered to be one of the greatest fighting games of the 90’s if not all time.

While Mortal Kombat 4 was also a good 3D fighting game its not remembered as much as MK I-III. While the plot for Mortal Kombat 4 with the addition of new characters such as Quan Chi, Shinnok, Reiko and others was pretty cool the MK series in general seems much better off with 2D gameplay opposed to 3D mainly because that one of the things that made the MK popular to begin with. In terms of over all success many probably give Soul Calibur over Mortal Kombat 4.

One response to “Soul Calibur (1998) vs Mortal Kombat 4 (1997) which game had more success?”

  1. Soul Calibur is better than Mortal Kombat IV by a long mile. Not only it was a lot more original back in 98 (with the sword/melee combat and it’s characters) but it looked a lot better than Midway’s title, even when gameplay wise MK4 wasn’t bad. SC is still definitely one of my favorite fighting games of all time.
