It was just recently announced that Sony plans on discontinuing the PlayStation Vita sometime in 2019. For those who do not know the PlayStation Vita is the hardware successor to the PlayStation Portable and was released back in December 2011. EGver since, the PlayStation Vita first appeared in retail a few year ago the handheld game console has not managed to live up to the expectations of many people especially top officials of Sony who were hoping that the console would have as much success as the PSP which was released back in December 2004.

Ever since, the PSP console was first released it managed to sell over 70 million units worldwide and is considered to be Sony’s best selling handheld game system ever. The PlayStation Vita had only managed to sell somewhere between 10-15 million units and was considered to be a flop in comparison to the PSP. While Sony made an attempt to compete with Nintendo in relation to handheld game consoles the fact is that Nintendo seemingly has no equal in relation to portable gaming in general. Nintendo has been making handheld game systems since the early 90’s and has seen major success with the likes of Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS along with the Nintendo 3DS. Since the Nintendo Switch also counts as a handheld game system to some extent discontinuing the PS Vita in 2019 would probably be best for Sony seeing how popular Nintendo’s latest console has become.
