When it comes down to video game systems of the 90’s the Nintendo 64 was one of the most popular consoles of that decade. Since its release back in 1996 has managed to sell over 32 million units worldwide thanks to the success of various titles such as Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye 007, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and others. Despite, becoming very popular following its release in 1996 some wonder whether or not the Nintendo should have waited until 1997 to release the N64 game console.

After all, there was still high profile titles being made for the SNES such as Super Mario RPG, Harvest Moon, Donkey Kong Country 3, Street Fighter Alpha 2 along with many other games that ended becoming popular on the 16 bit console. However, by the mid the 90’s game systems such as the PS1 along with the Sega Saturn were both consoles that Nintendo had to compete with during the time. Besides towards the end of 1996 the Super Nintendo Entertainment System had been approximately six years old.

Also, waiting a year later to release the N64 could have ended up working against them since titles such as Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Final Fantasy Tactics were huge attractions for the PS1 back in 1997. Despite, sering few popular SNES titles in 1996 Nintendo really needed the N64 that year .
