Retro Gaming 90’s- Mario Party 2: (1999)

Sometimes its hard to believe that the Mario Party series has been around for over 20 years. The very first Mario Party game came out back in December 1998 for the Nintendo 64 console. The original Mario Party was a success reaching over 2.7 million in sales while being praised by critics and various gaming publications for its multiplayer gameplay. The original Mario Party game became very popular and is arguably responsible for the popularization of the party genre which eventually became more mainstream to an extent during the 00’s and 10’s decades. Following the release of the original Mario Party game we got to see a direct sequel for the N64 in December 1999. Mario Party 2 featured six playable characters including Mario, Luigi, Wario, Princess Peach, and Yoshi. Also, Mario Party 2 included six different world maps such as Pirate Island, Western Land, Mystery Land, Space Land Horror Island and Bowser Land. The goal of the game is for players to try and collect as many stars as they can for the end. Mario Party 2 allowed four player co-op multiplayer gameplay and it included approximately 65 different mini-games. Players were able to earn coins throughout the game which could be used to purchase stars from Toad who is a non-playable character in Mario Party 2.

The game had three different difficulty ranging from Easy to Hard and players could select the duration of game in relation to overall turns. Players had an option to choose between Lite, Standard and Full Play which ranged from 20 to 50 turns overall. Mario Party 2 was just as fun as the original game because the multiplayer gameplay was simply addictive. Mario Party 2 was also a success on the N64 and despite not selling quite as much as its ’98 predecessor; the game managed to reach over 2.4 million in sales on the N64. There people who would on record and argue that Mario Party 2 is one of the best installments within its own series. The fact that Space Land is being brought back and reimagined for the Mario Party Superstars game for ’21; shows how popular Mario Party 2 was over 20 years ago.
