As many know one of the most popular sports related video games to appear consoles such the PS1 and Nintendo 64 in 1997 was NFL Blitz which was released by Midway. The graphics, gay and hard hitting 3D action that was included in NFL Blitz added to the overall replay value of the game itself and made it an enjoyable sports classic for those who were casual football fans back in the day. As piper as NFL Blitz was for the PS1 and the Nintendo 64 some questioned whether or not the original game could have been a success on 16 bit consoles such as the Super NES or the Sega Genesis.

It’s no secret that games such as Super Tecmo Bowl and John Madden ’93 were popular back in the early 90’s since they were more standard titles that closely followed the actual rules of football. The idea of having a hardcore themed football game like NFL Blitz in the early 90’s was something that could have definitely been an attraction due that time period. However, having a 16 bit NFL Blitz title would no have received the same type of reception from critics that it did as a 3D title for the PS1 or the Nintendo 64.
