When it comes down to racing titles from the early 90’s both Top Gear and Virtua Racing were very popular games that retro gamers think about from that time period. While the racing genre of gaming had yet to reach its boom period both Top Gear and Virtua Racing were fun classics that older gamers enjoyed for the SNES and the Sega age depending on what game console they owned back the day. While Top Gear was a fun 2D Racing game with bright visuals and catchy soundtracks Virtua Racing was special due to the fact that it was one of the first 3D games to ever appear within its genre in general.
Also, Virtua Racing was big in arcade centers worldwide following its initial release in Japan back in 1992. After, becoming very popular in arcade centers Virtua Racing was ported for the Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn and Sega 32X between 1994-1996. Those who picked up the Sega Saturn or the 32X version of Virtua Racing were for a real treat since the graphics and gameplay for those versions had a closer resemblance what was seen in arcade centers opposed to the Genesis port which was considered inferior.
However, the Genesis version of Virtua Racing was very expensive and priced at $100 in America due to the fact that the cartridge for this game included the Sega Virtua Processor which was similar to the Super FX chip Nintendo utilized for certain SNES titles such as Star Fox. In terms of overall quality many people would most likely give the edge to Virtua Racing over Top Gear especially since it was ahead of its time in relation to 3D racing which would eventually become big around the mid to late 90’s.
