As many people know Square Enix has recently announced that some older games within the Final Fantasy series will be appearing on the Nintendo Switch in the future. We learned this past Thursday that Final Fantasy 7, 9, 10 and 12 among a few games that will be remastered and released in HD for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. This comes after learning that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was going to be remastered and re-released for the Nintendo Switch earlier this past week. However, one more interesting things about Square Enix’s announcement regarding the future releases of older Final Fantasy games was the fact that FFVIII was not mentioned.
The fact, that Final Fantasy VIII was never mentioned is something that caught many people by surprise especially considering the fact that it was one of the best selling video games for the PS1 following its initial release in February 1999. Since its release Final Fantasy VIII has managed to sell over 7 million units worldwide for PS1 and was generally seen as one of the best 3D RPG titles of the 90’s next to its predecessor Final Fantasy VII.
While Square Enix has not commented on the exclusion of FFVIII in the set of Final Fantasy games appear on the Nintendo Switch its possible that the company may plan on doing something special with it in the future. After all, February 11th of next year will mark the 20 year anniversary of Final Fantasy VIII. If Square Enix decides to remake Final Fantasy VIII utilizing the Unreal Engine 4 into more of an action RPG with improved in-game similar to how they have with the Final Fantasy VII: Remake then that would epic.
