As many people know the Nintendo 64 was one of the most popular game consoles of the 90’s along with the likes of the PS1, Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. However, when it came down to sales the Nintendo 64 was not as successful as the PS1 seeing that the game system had only managed to sell over 32 million units worldwide. The PS1 in the other hand has managed to sell over 102 million units worldwide since its initial release back in 1994. Since the PS1 used CD ROM’s while Nintendo was still using cartridges for the Nintendo 64 some wonder if the 64 bit console would have been more successful in the early 90’s.

During the late 80’s and early 90’s the utilization of video game cartridges for consoles were still prominent. The fact that Nintendo had decided to maintain the use of video game cartridges for the Nintendo 64 console was something that some would argue cause the company their lead in the console wars against Sony back in the mid to late 90’s. If the Nintendo 64 was released before 1994 when the PS1 came out it could have possibly maintained its lead in the console wars. However, between 1990 and 1994 Nintendo along with other gaming companies had less advanced technology than they did later on in the decade. Producing a console like the N64 was something that Nintendo was not capable of back in the early 90’s.
