As many people know Metroid II: The Return of Samus was the second installment of the Metroid series which was first released exclusively for Game Boy back in November 1991. Despite, not being quite as popular as the original Metroid game for the NES Metroid II: The Return of Samus is generally regarded as one of the best Game Boy titles of the early 90’s. However, the sequel of the original Metroid game which came out in the late 80’s had seemed more deserving of a release for a home based console such as the NES or even the SNES which was released back in 1990.

Even though, we eventually got Super Metroid for the SNES that did not come until 1994. But since the original Game Boy was starting to become more popular following its release in 1989 it would make sense that Nintendo would release Metroid II: The Return of Samus for the handheld console during the early 90’s. In terms of whether or not Metroid II: The Return of Samus would have had more success on the SNES is questionable. However, Metroid II: Return of Samus was popular enough for Nintendo to release a remake of the game for the handheld 3DS console back in September 2017.

One response to “Could Metroid II: The Return of Samus have been more successful on the SNES?”

  1. This is a great review! I always wondered why this game wasn’t more mainstream. If it was released for the SNES, it would have been a perfect prelude to Super Metroid. Excellent review. Following you my friend. V.R.
