When we think about popular racing titles from the 80’s and early 90’s there are many titles that come to mind. Two titles that many people think about instantly included Outrun and F-Zero. In terms of racing classics Outrun was one of the most popular arcade titles of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

Ever since September 1986 Outrun has been ported for numerous game consoles such as the Master System, Sega Genesis, Amiga, Sega Saturn along with the PC Engine and more. Since its release Outrun saw numerous sequels including Out Run 3-D, Turbo Out Run, Outrunners and Outrun 2. However, the arcade version of the original Outrun game is considered to be one of the best racing video games of all time by various critics.

While Outrun is considered to be legendary in the gaming world the original F-Zero games is also seen by some as one of the best racing titles of the 90’s. The 16 bit gameplay that we saw on F-Zero which utilized Mode 7 for special effects was probably one of the most challenging 2D racing titles ever made.

Also, the futuristic setting along with the plot which was set in the 26th century added to the overall appeal of F-Zero. In fact F-Zero was one of the few games that appeared on the SNES Classic in September 2017 based on how popular it was back in the early 90’s. In terms of which game was more successful between Outrun and F-Zero is debatable. However, some people might give the edge to Outrun since it started off in arcade centers before it was ported to multiple game consoles unlike F-Zero.
