Luigi is considered to be one of the most iconic video game characters of all-time. Luigi is known around the world as the main deuteragonist of the Super Mario Bros franchise. Luigi is a character that has been around since the mid 80’s and despite his popularity he has always remained in the shadow of his brother Mario. Even though, Nintendo gave Luigi his own spin-off series known as Luigi’s Mansion which has been around since 2001; Luigi as a character has never really been presented as one that Nintendo fans could take seriously. Luigi is commonly presented as a goofball character who has often been in Mario’s shadow while no having any real character evolution. Aside from his inclusion in Super Mario games and a series of spin-off titles Nintendo never did anything interesting with Luigi. There are some who believe that Luigi would have made an interesting villain early on in the series. The idea of having Luigi work alongside Mario only to turn on him out of jealousy of being in his shadow would have made for an interesting storyline.

In almost every main Mario game Nintendo uses the same formula of Princess Peach being captured by Bowser which has obviously become repetitive over the past couple of decades. Aside from the Mario RPG spin-off games one the most interesting storylines that we got outside of the main series was in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins from 1992. The introduction of Wario as the main villain in Super Mario Land 2 was interesting while making him popular following his feud with Mario. If Nintendo had done something similar with Luigi it could have become an entire video game series because they are more connected to each other. However, if Nintendo made Luigi a villain who would fill the void as the main deuteragonist within the Super Mario Bros series? Its clear Nintendo never meant for Luigi to be more than a sidekick for Mario while providing players with another option aside from Mario in the main entry games.

One response to “Could Luigi Be a Good Villain?”

  1. I think Nintendo not wanting to turn Mario or Luigi into villains is the reason we have Wario and Waluigi!
