Its hard to believe that Super Mario Galaxy 2 came out on the Wii console back in 2010. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the direct sequel to the original game that came out in 2007. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was one of those games that was a big deal that came out during the Wii era. However, there were so many high profile titles on the Wii console between the late 00’s and early 10’s that overshadowed Super Mario Galaxy 2 back then. During the Wii era we had games like Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Play, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Party 8 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold more than Super Mario Galaxy 2. In fact, the original Super Mario Galaxy game sold more than Galaxy 2. While Super Mario Galaxy from ’07 sold more than 12 million copies following its release Galaxy 2 reached around 7.4 million. There are many Nintendo fans who believe that Super Mario Galaxy could have stood out more on the Wii-U. However, the Wii-U was a commercial failure and could of had a negative effect on the overall success of Super Mario Galaxy 2. Even though, Super Mario Galaxy 2 did not sell as such as its predecessor it had better gameplay, features and content. Super Mario Galaxy 2 had 49 different galaxies across seven different worlds. The story of the game features Princess Peach getting kidnapped by Bowser at the Star Festival in the Mushroom Kingdom.

One of the biggest features in Super Mario Galaxy 2 was that players had the ability to play as Yoshi similar to that of Super Mario World. Not only was Yoshi a playable character in Super Mario Galaxy 2 but Luigi was also unlockable by completing specific objectives and finishing the entire game. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was considerably more challenging than its ’07 predecessor which was probably one of the few negatives about the game. However, the difficulty of Super Mario Galaxy 2 was also something that older Nintendo fans appreciate because it reminds them of the NES/SNES days where games were made intentionally hard to complete. While Super Mario Galaxy 2 arguably had a moderate learning for those who did not play the firstSuper Mario Galaxy game it was something that casual gamers could easily become accustomed to. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is one of those games that deserved a direct sequel and its surprising that Nintendo never made a Super Mario Galaxy 3.
