Retro Gaming 10’s- Borderlands 2: (2012)

When it comes down to high profile action adventure role playing first person shooter games from the early 10’s one of the few titles that people instantly think about is Borderlands 2 from 2012. As many people already know the Borderland series had began back in ’09; with the very first installment of the series becoming a commercial success reach over 4.5 million in sales. Similar to its predecessor Borderlands 2 was released for the PS3 & Xbox 360 while utilizing the Unreal Engine 3 for gameplay. Also, Borderlands 2 saw the return of a loot system which allowed where players were able to randomly obtain weapons and alternative types of gear. Borderlands 2 had included a single-player campaign mode and also featured online multiplayer co-op gameplay which was beginning to become popular between the late 00’s-early 10’s. Similar to the original game Borderlands 2 featured four main playable characters including Axton, Zero, Salvador and Maya who all had different skill backgrounds when it came down to combat. There were also two additional characters known as Gaige & Greg who were also playable within the single-player campaign mode. However, Gaige & Greg were featured in Borderlands 2 as DLC and needed to be purchased. The main villain for Borderlands 2 was a man named Handsome Jack who managed to control of a fictional planet named Pandora.

In Borderlands 2 Handsome Jack is the President of the Hyperion Corporation and is basically a dictator who believes he is a hero. Handsome Jack believed that the planet that he enslaved was full of bandits and that he some type of savior despite his vices. Jack’s tyranny over Pandora had become so unbearable to a point where the Vault Hunters are forced to align themselves with a resistance group of guerrilla fighters known as the Crimson Raiders. In fact, Handsome Jack’s endgame was to acquire the Vault Of The Warrior to “cleanse” Pandora since he believed that it was full of nothing but criminals. Borderlands 2 featured nineteen main quests and at least 128 different missions without DLC and would give people countless hours of gameplay. There were a variety of positives in Borderlands 2 including the storyline, level designs along with the diverse choice of weapons that players had in combat. The main weapons featured in Borderlands 2 included sniper-rifles, assault rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, sub-machine guns and many others. The weapons in Borderlands 2 could be acquired through defeated enemies or purchased from vendors. The XP level up system along with the skill trees that each player possess were also strong features which added to Borderlands 2 as an enjoyable RPG title. Not only was Borderlands 2 a massive success commercially but it managed to reach over 11 million copies in sales since its release in 2012. Borderlands 2 was easily one of the best games within its genre as it related to ’12; and is arguably the best installment within the entire series depending on who you ask.
