Gaming Consoles 90’s- Neo Geo Pocket Color: (1999)

The Neo Geo Pocket Color from ’99 is a handheld game system made by SNK that many retro gamers probably do not remember. Neo Geo Pocket Color was a sixth generation console that was released the following year after the original Neo Geo Pocket came out in ’98. The is no question that Neo Geo Pocket Color was designed to compete with Nintendo’s Game Boy Color which was released in October 1998. The Neo Geo Pocket Color was definitely overshadowed in countries like America due to the growing popularity of the Game Boy product line; along with the Pokémon titles that appeared on the handheld game system between ’96-’99. As far as graphics for the Neo Geo Pocket Color was concerned it seemingly had more superior 8 bit like graphics than its competitor Game Boy Color. There were games such as King Of Fighters R-2, SNK vs Capcom, Metal Slug 1st Mission and others that were fun to play on SNK’s handheld game systems. The only thing about the Neo Geo Pocket Color was that it was available in stores for a very short period of time following its release. The Neo Geo Pocket Color was available in retail between 1999-2001 before was ultimately discontinued.

In terms of profit the Neo Geo Pocket Color could have been more successful if it remained available in retail until the mid 00’s. Neo Geo Pocket Color was originally priced at $69.95 following its release in America and only required a set of two AA batteries similar to that of Game Boy Color. However, during the early to mid 00’s Nintendo started improving the quality of the Game Boy product line. Nintendo had released the Game Boy Advance SP in ’03 which included a build in rechargeable lithium ion battery. Also, during Q4 of 2004 Nintendo had released the handheld DS game system which reached over 154 million in sales; before it was ultimately discontinued in retail in 2013. In terms of competition Nintendo’s Game Boy line seemed like it had no equal during the 00’s; it might one of the many reasons why the Neo Geo Pocket Color was discontinued after a few years. Despite, being available in retail for a short period of time the Neo Geo Pocket Color is an underrated game system. If the Neo Geo Pocket Color came out during the early to mid 90’s it could have had more success than it ultimately did between ’99-’01.
