As far as retro games within the Sonic the Hedgehog series is concerned many people instantly the trilogy which appeared on the Sega Genesis between ’91-94. In relation to popularity the first three Sonic games were arguably the best titles that Sega had developed within the set in relation to the 90’s. However, there were games that were released on the Sega Saturn such as Sonic 3D Blast along with Sonic R which are two titles that do not get as much attention because they were not as popular as the classics from the 16-bit Sega Genesis console. Sonic R was initially released back in November 1997 before appearing in Microsoft Windows in the Fall of 1998. Sonic R ended up becoming the very first racing game within the entire series and while it was considered to be solid despite having a small roster it was praised for its visuals and mainly its soundtrack. As far as popularity is concerned Sonic R was not nearly on the same level of Mario Kart 64 which was released back in December 1996.
The Mario Kart series had been around since 1992 and the very first game within that set ended up becoming a cult classic and a title that reached close to 9 million in sales. The Sega Saturn in general was not as popular in America as the Sega Genesis possibly due to competition from the PS1 and the Nintendo 64 during the 90’s decade. Even though, Sonic R was not nearly as successful as other Sonic games from the 90’s many people praised the game for its level design and it looked like something that could work in arcade centers. In fact, some retro gamers might argue that Sonic R was a more memorable title than Sonic Racers from 2006 despite being more inferior in relation to quality. Sonic R was a game that could have possibly been a bigger attraction in the Sega Dreamcast in ’98 following its release in countries such as Japan & America during that year.
