As far as retro based consoles are concerned many people have heard of the Hyperkin RetroN 2 which is a game system that plays both NES along with SNES titles. As far as popularity is concerned retro based game systems such as the Hyperkin RetroN 2 are not as popular as the likes of the SNES Classic or the PS1 Classic. In fact, some argue that if Nintendo had released a game console like the Hyperkin RetroN 2 back in the early 90’s that could have ended up selling more than the Super Nintendo Entertainment System did following its initial release back in 1990. In total, the SNES managed to sell over 49 million units worldwide throughout the 90’s decade surpassing the Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and even the Nintendo 64 in sales which was quite impressive.

However, its unlikely that a console like the Hyperkin RetroN 2 could have competed with the lines of the PS1 back in the 90’s which managed to reach over 101 million units worldwide in relation to sales. Either way, seeing the Hyperkin RetroN 2 back in the early 90’s would have been legendary and have definitely been a bigger attraction than simply having the 16-bit SNES console.
