In relation to the console wars of the 10’s decade the Xbox One has definitely been surpassed by the PlayStation 4 as far as popularity and success is considered. While the PlayStation 4 has managed to reach at least 80 million units worldwide since its release in November 2013 the Xbox One was also released during that same month and has sold approximately 39 million. Some people might argue that Microsoft’s Xbox One console was not as successful as Sony’s PlayStation 4 due to factors such as high pricing along with first party games not being as popular as the one featured on rival game systems. While the Xbox One did not sell nearly as much as the PS4 it was still far more successful than the Nintendo Wii-U which came out back in late 2012.
Since its release the Nintendo Wii-U managed to sell under 10 million units worldwide and was eventually discontinued in early 2017 due to its lack of commercial success in comparison to the original Wii console. Even though, the Wii-U was discontinued for falling below desired expectations in relation to sales some wonder whether or not the same thing would will end up becoming true for the Xbox One in the future. By the time we get to 2020 the PlayStation 5 will most likely be available in retail and in some ways will eventually make the Xbox One look obsolete despite how spectacular the high definition visuals for video games look on that console. But seeing how Microsoft kept the Xbox 360 around for at least a decade since its release in November 2005 its very hard to speculate on how long the Xbox One will remain in retail right now.
