When it comes down to beat em up classics in general two the most popular games to have ever appeared on the NES was Double Dragon and Battletoads between the late 80’s-early 90’s. Shortly after, Double Dragon was released in arcade centers back in 1987 the game was ported for multiple game systems including the Master System, NES along with Game Boy. Ever since, its release the original Double Dragon game was praised by fans and critics alike leading to development of numerous sequels including Double Dragon II: The Revenge along with Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone for the NES. The late 80’s when the beat em up genre of gaming was starting to become very popular along with 2D run & gun titles.
During the early 90’s the beat em up genre arguably reached its peak in popularity with the emergence of games such as the Streets of Rage series along with TMNT: Turtles in Time and X-Men Arcade. The world also got the chance to see the initial release of the very first Battletoads game back in 1991. As cool as Battletoads was for the NES many people would often complain about its level of difficulty despite having co-op gameplay. Despite, how much fun Battletoads was the NES was starting to get during the early 90’s and people were turning to 16 bit consoles such as the SNES and the Sega Genesis Aron that time period. Based on the year it was released in more people are likely to choose Double Dragon over Battletoads in terms popularity.
