As many people know the Nintendo 64 was one of the most popular game consoles of the 90’s. Since its release back in 1996 the Nintendo 64 has sold over 32 million units worldwide which was impressive. However, the Nintendo 64 did not sell quite as much as the Super NES which was released back in 1990. Following the release of the Super MES the game managed to sell over 49 million units worldwide despite being more inferior game in terms of quality. There are some people who would argue that the Nintendo 64 was ahead of its time and should have been saved for the 2000’s.

This begs the question on whether or not the Nintendo 64 could have been more successful during the 2000’s? While the quality did improve substantially will the release of consoles like the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 there was no question that some of the most popular Nintendo games from that decade were released on handheld devices such as the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS which included Pokémon titles such as Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, etc.

In fact, Pokémon DS looked and felt like a handheld N64 console and ended up becoming one of the best selling games systems of all time by reaching over 154 million units worldwide. However, the only reason why the Nintendo DS has as much success as it did is because it was a handheld console. The Nintendo 64 most likely would have sold less than it did in the 90’s especially seeing how popular the PlayStation 2 was along with the emergence of the very first Xbox console back in the early 2000’s.
