When it comes down to underrated platform titles for the Nintendo 64 back in the late 90’s one of the few titles that some might think about is Goemon’s Great Adventure. For those who are unaware Goemon’s Great Adventure was released back in Japan in December 1998 before coming to countries like America & Europe the following year in 1999. The game was pretty unique because unlike many other platformers which were released for the Nintendo 64 this game was a 2D side scrolling title with 3D graphics. There were hardly any games like this in the Nintendo 64 back in the day with the exception of Yoshi’s Story. Throughout, Goemon’s Great Adventure players had the opportunity to unlock new stages on different world maps.

Completing dungeons allowed players to open up new world maps with the additional prerequisite of gaining certain entry passes in order to do so. Also, the creativity of the game was impressive considering the fact that the setting resembled a fantasy version of Edo Japan with realistic gameplay mechanics such as a night and day system which was somewhat reminiscent of Castlevania II for the NES. In addition, to all of these cool things the game provides you with four playable characters including Saskue, Yae Ebisumaru and Goemon himself. As a side scrolling 2D platformer for the Nintendo 64 Goemon’s Great Adventure seemed highly underrated and never got as much attention as it should have on the Nintendo 64 back in 1999.
