When it comes down to Super Mario games in general they usually turn out to be best sellers on Nintendo based consoles no matter what. On the Nintendo Wii-U the New Super Mario Bros. U along with Super Mario 3D World managed to close to 6 million units worldwide separately. Now when we look at Super Mario Odessey which was released back in late October of 2017 the game has managed to sell over nine million copies in less than five months.

New Super Mario Bros U along with Super Mario 3D World were both released in 2012 & 2013. From the days both games were available in retail until the Wii-U was discontinued in early 2017 both titles did not sell nearly as much as Super Mario Odessey did on the Nintendo Switch.

The marketing that Nintendo put into the Switch console along with the mainstream attention it drew in 2017 definitely played a role in making many people around the world interested in purchasing Super Mario Odessey. If there was never a Switch console and Super Mario Odessey was released in the Wii-U the game would have been a success. However, Super Mario Odessey definitely would not have sold over nine million copies within a few months.
