When it comes down to Mario Kart games over the past two decades a majority of them are considered to be classics.  Despite, how much the older Mario Kart titles were from the SNES all the way down to the Nintendo Switch one of the few things that we never got a chance to see in any of them is a story mode.   The idea of having a Mario Kart game with a plot along with cinematic cutscenes is something that would be interesting especially since recurring characters such as Mario, Bowser, Peach, Toad and Luigi being in a majority of the older titles.

However, not having a story mode is one of the many things that has added to the appeal of the Mario Kart series.   Just about every Mario Kart game that you can think of were just races where players could participate in a Grand Prix mode with one or two players.  Also, Mario Kart games have generally included multiplayer modes that included to four players simultaneously.   The game modes of a majority of Mario Kart games were generally enough to keep players entertained along with having to race with challenging artificial intelligence at the 150cc level.   Adding a story mode to a Mario Kart seems a bit risky because it could possibly detract from the quality of the game if its not done right; but since Nintendo specializes in being innovative the company could definitely pull it off.
