Its hard to believe that its been a decade since Doom 2016 was released during the PS4/Xbox One era. The Doom video game was one of the few decent things to have come out of 2016. The Doom 2016 was considered to be a reboot for the series despite it initially be called Doom 4 back in the late 00’s during its early developmental phase. Doom 2016 was developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks and was considered to the first main entry in the series since Doom 3 from 2004. Despite, Doom 2016 not being as scary as its ’04 predecessor the game itself looked impressive. Doom 2016 featured fast-paced run and gun first-person shooter gameplay and had grim yet futuristic atmosphere which contributed to the game’s overall appeal. The heavy metal soundtrack was also another defining feature of Doom 2016 because it not only captured the vibe of the game but also year itself which was very dark. The plot for Doom 2016 involved the main character Doom Slayer awakening on Mars in order to stop a massive demon invasion.

The setting for the game takes place at a UAC facility on Mars which gave Doom 2016 a more science fiction feel to it. Doom 2016 featured thirteen levels within the single player campaign and featured advanced weaponry. In Doom 2016 players had access to weapons like Plasma Rifles, Chainguns, Shotguns, Assault Rifles, Rocket Launchers, etc. While the weapon choices were cool some people found it disappointing that Doom 2016 did not have a dual-wielding mechanic. Its likely that dual-wielding was omitted in Doom 2016 so the creators could focus more on speed along with fluid gameplay. Even though, Doom 2016 may have had its faults the developers added certain mechanics to make up for any weaknesses the game had. The inclusion of Glory Kills made the gameplay in Doom 2016 more convenient for players since it helped them replenish their health during combat. Doom 2016 was also remembered for its robust upgrade system in relation to weapons, character suit along with core stats. Even though, Doom 2016 had only one main ending with a shorter single-player campaign than Doom Eternal it still has a good replay value.

Doom 2016 felt like a modernized version of classic Doom entries from the 90’s. Not only was it impressive to see how far the Doom series had come since its ’93 inception but it felt more popular than ever by 2016. After its 2016 release the Doom reboot managed to reach around 3.6 million copies in sales and was one of the most popular first-person shooter games of that year. Doom 2016 felt like a game for people who preferred an alternative to games like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Halo 5: Guardians from 2015-2016. Even though, Doom 2016 came out a decade ago it still managed to have more commercial success than Doom: The Dark Ages from 2025. Doom 2016 is still talked about fondly today while it feels like people already forgot about Doom: The Dark Ages despite how good it is. Doom 2016 is arguably one of the most popular first-person shooters of the 10’s decade and is one of the few good things to come out of that dark, turbulent and tragic year.
