
Its hard to believe that a decade has passed since Overwatch was released. Overwatch is considered to be one of the most high profile first-person shooter games to have emerged from the 2010’s decade. Overwatch was developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment and it was among several games from the 10’s decade that helped keep the first-person shooter genre alive during that decade. Overwatch was designed primarily as a heroic team based shooter game that allowed cross-platform gameplay between consoles like PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. The characters along with the level designs for Overwatch had vibrant adventurous tones and featured fast-paced 6v6 gameplay which many ended up becoming addicted to. Overwatch featured different game modes like Hybrid, Control, Escort and Assault and featured loot boxes which ended up being very controversial. Overwatch was one of the first major shooter games of the mid-2010’s outside of the Call of Duty and Battlefield series to become a mainstream attraction with both kids and adults.

The tone for Overwatch was more wholesome yet impressive while most popular shooter titles were heavily military based. Overwatch felt like a true alternative to games like Call of Duty and Battlefield because it brought something both different and unique to gamers. Overwatch felt like it had more of a pop based appeal similar to that of Fortnite which came out in Summer 2017. The maps in Overwatch were amazing and players were able to interact with each online as the competed against each other. Overwatch was one of the few titles from the past decade or so that made online gaming seemingly more popular than standard AAA video games. It should be noted that Blizzard Entertainment went out of their way to create larger than life characters for Overwatch that could capture the attention of players. Despite, not being free to play like Overwatch 2 from 2022 the original game ended being significantly better in terms of quality. The popularity of Overwatch lasted from 2016 until the early 10’s and had about 35 different seasons before the sequel was released.

Overwatch was one of the most successful video games of its era and it went on to generate more than $1 billion in revenue for Blizzard Entertainment. Overwatch had become so popular within the past decade to a point where some would argue that it surpassed a few of Blizzard Entertainment’s biggest IP’s. In this day and age Overwatch seems more culturally relevant than the likes Diablo, StarCraft and WarCraft. If anything Overwatch is probably the best think Blizzard Entertainment has going for them right now aside from Diablo IV. Its hard to believe that Overwatch is considered to be a last generation video game. Overwatch looks like a heroic multiplayer shooter that could have been released last year which shows how well it has aged since 2016. Overwatch was probably one of the few good things to have come out of 2016 especially considering how horrible that year was in general. Overwatch had an open beta that had around 10 million players which is an astounding accomplishment . At its peak Overwatch reportedly had around 50 million players which pretty much solidified its status as one of the greatest shooter games of the 2010’s decade.
