Its hard to believe that its been 20 years since the original Super Mario Strikers game came out on GameCube. Those who grew up in the 2000’s and owned a GameCube already know how special the game was because of how chaotic and exciting the gameplay was. Super Mario Strikers was probably the first major soccer title that we got in the Mario spin-off series. Super Mario Strikers felt different from your typical FIFA soccer game because it was gimmicky and had various features that made it feel like a Nintendo game. Super Mario Strikers featured various power-ups along with an environmental hazards like an electrical fence that made the game feel like more than just an normal soccer title. While Super Mario Strikers was both innovative and addictive at the time one of the major downsides of the game was its small roster. The roster for Super Mario Strikers consisted of the likes of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, Yoshi, Donkey Kong along with an unlockable Super Team Captain. Each main character who was also a captain had their own special Super Strike which would allow them to score two points with every shot. Super Mario Strikers was a game that beginners could learn easily which added to its overall causal appeal. However, Super Mario Strikers would have been more memorable if the game had a story mode that explains why all the characters were playing soccer to begin with.

Unfortunately, none of the other entries in the Mario Strikers series has a traditional campaign mode since the franchise was created mainly for enjoyable multiplayer gameplay. The Tutorial mode in Super Mario Strikers was also useful in helping players get accustomed to different game modes like Cup Battle and Exhibition. Super Mario Strikers at the time felt almost as chaotic as Super Smash Bros Melee and more fun the Mario Tennis game for the Nintendo 64. Super Mario Strikers managed to sell over 1.2 million copies since its release back in 2005. Super Mario Strikers could have possibly sold more than it did if the GameCube console did not flop on a commercial level. Super Mario Strikers was quite possibly one of the best sports related Mario games that Nintendo had made during the 2000’s. Super Mario Strikers is still popular among a niche audience of gamers who are hardcore Nintendo fans. Super Mario Strikers Charged which appeared on Nintendo Wii in 2007 sold over 1.6 million since its release. Also, the most recent installment Mario Strikers: Battle League sold over 2.5 million since its release on the Switch console in 2023. Super Mario Strikers is one of those games that deserved a high definition Remake for years. But since Nintendo is still making new installments in the series that ends up selling more there is really no reason for the company to remake the original Super Mario Strikers title.
