Its hard to believe that its been 10 years since Tekken 7 came out for the PlayStation 4 and PC. Tekken 7 came about eight years following the release of its prequel Tekken 6 and is considered to be one of the most successful entries within the entire franchise. Tekken 7 was seen as a significant improvement over Tekken 6 in various aspects including gameplay, graphics and storytelling. The story in Tekken 7 focused on the continued conflict between the Mishima Zaibasu and the G-Corporation and was supposed to lead to the conclusion of feud involving Kazuya and Heihachi. The cinematic cutscenes in Tekken 7 looked impressive and Bandi Namco’s approach to the storytelling was pretty unique. The story in Tekken 7 was told by an investigative narrator whose family was killed due to the ongoing conflict between the Mishima Zaibasu and the G-Corporation.

While the storyline for Tekken 7 was compelling there were fans of the series who were a bit surprised on how short the campaign was. There were also complaints about how new characters like Claudio Serafino, Josie Rizal, Katarina Alves played no signifiant role in the main story for Tekken 7. Not to mention the negative Lucky Chloe got from western gamers for being too much of a anime stereotype in a game players are suppose to take seriously. The new characters introduced in Tekken 7 ended up being largely forgettable compared to older names like Nina Williams, Paul Phoenix, Marshall Law, Heihachi Mishima, Yoshimitsu, Jin Kazama and others. Also, the inclusion of guest characters like Akuma from Street Fighter along with Geese Howard from King of Fighters. The Tekken 7 roster had more than 50 characters and it introduced new gameplay mechanics including Rage Arts and Power Crushes. It should also be noted that Bandi Namco had made modifications to the combo system for Tekken7 to make it more casual friendly.

However, despite how easy it was for casuals to learn how to utilize certain gameplay mechanics the overall learning curve for Tekken 7 was steep. The problem with Tekken 7 was that the gameplay because more complex compared to its predecessors and it lacked robust in-game tutorials to help players evolve. If Tekken 7 had strong tutorials like Tekken 8 did the overall gameplay experience could of been more rewarding. Even though, Tekken 7 had is fair share of flaws the positives outweighed the negatives and it ended up selling around 12 million copies since its release. Tekken 7 sold almost as much as Mortal Kombat X did and both games came out in 2015. Not to mention the fact that Tekken 7 ended up selling more than Street Fighter V from 2016. While some would argue that Tekken 7 is overrated because its now quite as memorable as classic entries like Tekken 3; it had the most commercial success in the entire franchise and that is practically indisputable.
