The Punch-Out series is considered to be legendary by many people in relation to the world of gaming. The Punch-Out franchise began back in 1984 during the NES era and was very popular during its that time period. It should also be noted that boxing in general was also very popular during the 80’s. The amount of success and mainstream recognition that the original Punch-Out game had following its NES release eventually lead to Nintendo creating the iconic Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out title which came out in 1987. The original Punch-Out games from the 80’s were seen as notoriously difficult but the popularity of the series continued into the early 90’s with Super Punch-Out!!! on the SNES. The latest main entry within the Punch-Out series that we got came out in 2009 for the Wii console. The Punch-Out game from 2009 got overshadowed by many high profile video games that appeared on the Wii console during the late 00’s-early 10’s.

Also, the Punch-Out series has been mainly forgotten about by most people in general despite it being one of Nintendo’s most popular IP’s outside of Mario, Zelda and the Metroid series. The Punch-Out game from 2009 reached over one million copies in sales on the Wii console which was impressive. The latest entry in the Punch-Out series did not managed to sell nearly as much as other Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, Wii Sports, Mario Kart Wii and others. However, Nintendo is lacking in high profile first-party sports titles especially in relation to combat sports like boxing. A modernized reboot of Punch-Out with larger than life gimmicky characters could be something that appeals to both children along with a casual audience of gamers.
