The Halo series has been around since the early 2000’s and has easily become one of the most popular first-person shooter franchises of all-time within the past two decades. The latest installment within the series Halo Infinite came out back in 2021 and despite the level of hype it received prior to its release it ended up becoming a commercial failure. Despite, being considered a failure in the eyes following its initial release the player count for the free season Season 5 Battle Pass had was unusually high following it launch back in October 2023. It was reported that Season 5 for Halo Infinite had more than 18,000 active users which was more than double the number that it in September 2023. Even though, Halo Infinite had seen an increase of players since its launch in 2021 some would go on record and argue that Halo 5: Guardians from 2015 was a more exciting game. Halo 5: Guardians generated more than $400 million in revenue and was praised for the introduction of new gameplay mechanics and its creative landscapes. Halo 5: Guardians was considered to be a more superior game than its 2012 predecessor Halo 4 and obviously got more press and publicity following its release several years ago. While Halo 4 considered to be underrated by critics more than a decade later many would argue that the series peaked in popularity during the 2000’s. During the 2000’s decade the Halo series appealed to more casuals considering how popular the first person shooter genre was back then.
While the first person shooter genre was still popular during the 2010’s and even now to some extent there has been more preference for action-adventure and RPG titles. Halo Infinite was considered to be great game by critics for a variety of reasons and including its world design, storyline along with its multiplayer game modes. Despite, the praise Halo Infinite received some are still not pleased with it because it was not developed by Bungie the same company that worked on the original three Halo titles from the 2000’s. While 343 Industries put out some good Halo titles some feel that putting out a new title every few years could end up being detrimental to the series. So far we have only got to see one major Halo title during the PS5/Xbox Series X era and another major entry probably would not hurt at all. The idea of waiting for Microsoft’s next generation console in to release another Halo game does not make a lot of sense mainly because the Xbox Series X is more than three years old now. Also, there is no guarantee that Microsoft is going to release a next generation game system especially with rumors of the corporation focusing more on cloud based gaming in the future.
