The early 2010’s was a great time to be alive especially if you were a gamer. There were so many awesome games that appeared on the PlayStation 3 console during the early 10’s that are now considered to be classics such as Heavy Rain, God of War III, Bioshock 2 and Battlefield 3. While the games that were just mentioned were among the best video games from the PS3 era many would argue that those titles do not hold a candle to the critically acclaimed Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception game from 2011. Uncharted 3 was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and was the direct sequel to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves from 2009. Uncharted 3 had almost everything one could ask for in a action-adventure video game such as compelling storytelling, an amazing music score and smooth graphics which stands the test of time over a decade later. The pacing of the campaign in Uncharted 3 is nearly perfect because everything is action-packed and the story did not drag on longer than it needed to. One of the most intriguing aspects of story in Uncharted 3 was backstory featured in Chapter 2 on how the main character Nathan Drake and the deuteragonist Victor Sullivan first met about two decades prior to the setting of the game itself. Chapters 2 and 3 gave players more insight on the relationship between Blake and Sully along with establishing why Katherine Marlow was the main antagonist of Uncharted 3. Chapter 1 was action packed and saw Blake and Sully get double crossed in a trade deal gone wrong which eventually lead to them trying to escape. Uncharted 3 had numerous unexpected twists and turns which made the story more appealing because players learned shocking information regarding Nathan’s ring which belonged within his lineage. The “Sir Parvis Magna” ring was once possessed by his ancestor Sir Francis Drake who served Queen Elizabeth back in the 16th century. The story for Uncharted 3 revolved mainly around Katherine Marlow and her henchmen trying to steal the ring that belonged to Sir Francis Blake in order to discover Sir Francis Blake’s secret in relation possible treasures that was worth millions.

Players eventually find out that not only does Marlow want Drake’s ring but she also has the cipher disk which would grant her access to the ancient secret regarding the Atlantis of Sands. We also find out that Queen Elizabeth of England was the founder of a secret society known as the Hermetic Order which was discovered four centuries prior to the setting of the game. The Hermetic Order was notorious for using fear and intimidation to control others in England and it was believed that Sir Francis Drake was hiding something very big from Queen Elizabeth and her forces. It was also revealed that Katherine Marlow was the current leader of the Hermetic Order. The level designs within Uncharted 3 were among the best that you would see in any action-adventure video game from the 2010’s. There were places like London Underground from Chapter 5 that looked very impressive along with the temple in Yemen towards the end of the game. The parkour gameplay in Uncharted 3 was also a strong positive because players were unlikely to get bored and always had to focus on what they were doing to stay alive. The music score was arguably the best thing about Uncharted 3 aside from the storyline because it made everything feel more dramatic and you felt like you were watching an actual movie at times. The final boss fight against Talbot following Marlow’s death was probably one of the best that you would ever see in any action-adventure video game period. The button command prompts used throughout the game made Uncharted 3 a very easy game to learn and was especially helpful during the final boss battle. Uncharted 3 was a massive commercial success following it release for the PlayStation 3 back in 2011 and ended up reaching at least six million copies in worldwide sales. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Fortune was practically a video game masterpiece that deserved its own film adaptation. Even though, the Uncharted 2022 movie was a box office success earning over $401 million the story for Drake’s Fortune was far more intriguing and probably would of ended up being better.
