When it comes down to classic video games from the PS2 era of the early 2000’s one of the few games that almost everyone talks about is Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 2. Its hard to believe that its been over 20 years since the game was released especially since there has only been five main installments within the series since 1998. Metal Gear Solid 2 is considered to be iconic due to its incredible storytelling and its unforgettable plot which felt darker than than the ’98 installment. The plot revolves around a terrorist organization that demanded a hefty ransom for the President’s life after seizing control of an off shore cleaning facility known as Big Shell. It should also be noted that plot for Metal Gear Solid 2 involved players covering a global conspiracy by an elite organization known as the Patriots which somewhat reflects reality as it relates to the New World Order. There also elements of postmodernism, fake news and artificial intelligence that MGS2: Sons of Liberty emphasized as well which made the game feel like it was ahead of its time.
Metal Gear Solid 2 was praised by many people for its graphics, stealth gameplay along with the introduction of a new main protagonist named Raiden. While many people feel that Metal Gear Solid 3 from 2004 was a better installment than Metal Gear Solid 2: it should be noted that MGS2 from ’01 was one of the best selling games for the PlayStation 2 during the 2000’s decade. In fact, Metal Gear Solid 2 had managed to reach at least 7 million copies in sales following its release and since then has been widely regarded as one of the best video games of the 2000’s decade. Its a bit shocking that Konami and Hideo Kojima had never made any plans to remaster the game during the early 10’s for the PS4 or the Xbox One prior their fallout back in 2015. But seeing that Konami and Hideo Kojima are apparently on good terms again and that a remake of Metal Gear Solid: Tactical Espionage Action is likely to happen on the PS5 in the near future; its possible that we could get a remake of MGS2: Sons of Liberty later down the line as well.
