When it comes down to video games in general two of the most popular companies that develop high profile RPG titles in this day and age are CD Projekt Red and Square Enix. Everyone knows that Square Enix has been around for at least three decades now and are well know for popular video game franchises such as the legendary Final Fantasy series. When it comes down to mainstream JRPG & RPG titles it seemed like Square Enix has been unrivaled for many years. In fact, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII game from ’97 is still a massive attraction today with the FFVII Remake from 2020 reaching over five million copies in sales. During the 2010’s decade CD Projekt had produced classics like such as Cyberpunk 2077 along with the Witcher series. The Witcher series started back in ’07 and is not on the same level as the Final Fantasy series in terms of mainstream popularity but at the same time everyone is looking forward to the official announcement of The Witcher 4.
The Cyberpunk 2077 game was one of the most highly anticipated RPG titles of the 2020’s decade with approximately nine years of development going into it. Despite, all the complaints following the turbulent launch of Cyperpunk 2077 the game has become one of the best selling RPG titles within the past decade by reaching at least 20 million copies in worldwide sales. While CD Projekt has been on a role in relation to high profile RPG releases like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from ’15 or Cyberpunk 2077; Square Enix has released blockbuster titles such as: Kingdom Hearts III, Nier: Automata, Marvel: Guardians of the Galaxy and Final Fantasy VII: Remake. Also, there are several video game companies like Bethsheda Softworks, Bandi Namco, Sony Interactive Entertainment and others that are releasing high profile RPG titles; that are closer to surpassing Square Enix in popularity in relation to that genre if they have not already.
