As many people are aware the Forza racing series is extremely popular within the gaming world. The very first Forza game came out back in May 2005 and since then it spawned a series of sequel which contributed to the series becoming a household name in relation to the racing genre. The Forza Motorsport games from ’05-’17 were all developed by Turn 10 Studios and they competed with some of Sony’s Gran Turismo games which were featured on consoles such as the PS2, PS3 along with the PS4. There have been about seven main entries within the Forza Motorsport series with the fourth installment arguably being the best within the series according to critics. Forza Motorsport 4 from ’11 was praised for the inclusion features such as Kinect gameplay along with Autovista mode; which made the presentation of Forza Motorsport 4 appear more realistic than its predecessors. Despite, the Forza Motorsport series improving almost every other year as the series continues many would argue that Playground Games had developed more high-profile Forza titles such as Horizon 4 from 2018. The Forza Horizon series began in ’12 which was about a year following the release of Forza Motorsport 4.
While Forza Horizon from ’12 was a great racing game for its time it still did not reach the level of popularity that Gran Turismo 5 & 6 did following their respective releases in ’10 and ’13. To be fair Gran Turismo in general was and still is the biggest racing franchise within the video game world. However, when it comes down to quantity in terms of producing racing titles within the 10’s decade; that was definitely something that the Forza series had over Gran Turismo with the quality improving towards the mid to late 10’s. In terms of quality the best overall Forza title that we got to see came from Playground Games which was Forza Horizon 4 from 2018. While there might be several fans of the series who prefer Forza Horizon 3 from ’16 because of its storyline and high replay value; Forza Horizon 4 looked more superior graphically and was more successful on a commercial level. In fact, Forza Horizon 4 reached over 24 million players worldwide by November 2020 mainly because it was the sequel to the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon 3 titles. While the exact sales numbers for Forza Horizon 4 is unknown its predecessor was one of the best selling games on the Xbox One reaching over 3.9 million worldwide.
But if we are talking about the most successful Forza game that Turn 10 Studios has produced within the past fifteen plus years that did well in terms of sales; Forza Motorsport 2 from the Xbox 360 era was Turn 10 Studio’s most successful entry from a sales standpoint. Since its release in ’05 Forza Motorsport 2 managed to reach over 2.6 million in sales worldwide. Despite, the quality visual quality of Forza Motorsport 2 being more inferior than its successors; it thrived on the Xbox 360 during a time period where the racing genre of gaming was arguably at its peak. The 00’s was the best time period to be a fan of racing games and for the most part Sony’s Gran Turismo titles were bigger mainstream attractions than all of its competitors. In terms of which developer made better Forza title within 10’s decade many would probably go on record and argue in favor of Playground Games. However, those who are huge fans of Forza Motorsport 4-7 would probably argue otherwise and put Turn 10 Studios over Playground Games.
