Retro Gaming 90’s- Space Channel 5: (1999)

As far as memorable games for the Sega Dreamcast is concerned there are some people would recall Space Channel 5 as being few titles that stood out with the likes of Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi. Space Channel 5 was a music game developed by Grounding, Inc released in late 1999 that had a futuristic theme interesting plot that was set approximately 500 years in the future from that year. The idea of various interstellar stations competing in a ratings war was something that seemed very creative from a fictional standpoint. The plot saw players trying to rescue hostages who were kidnapped by an alien race known as Morolians along with controlling Ulala a news reporter and the main character of the game. The idea of using dance moves to progress throughout the game may have reminded some people of Dance Dance Revolution which between ’98-’99 when the first game it appeared in arcade centers.

As far as popularity is concerned Space Channel 5 was not quite in the same level as DDR but it was one of the more unique Sega titles that we have ever seen. In fact, Space Channel 5 is still considered to be popular today especially since we are supposed be getting a VR version of this game sometime in 2019 on a date that has yet to be revealed. Sometimes its hard to believe that it has been almost 20 years since Space Channel 5 was released for Dreamcast. As a title within the music genre of gaming Space Channel 5 is one that could still hold up in 2019.
