As far as video games characters are concerned Mario has been the most recognizable name in gaming since the 80’s and is still the big attraction today especially since Nintendo has developed so many high profile titles involving him. There are games such as Super Mario Bros (1985), Super Mario Bros 3 (1988), Super Mario World (1990), Super Mario 64 (1996), Super Mario Galaxy (2007) and countless others that are all considered classics and are considered among the best ever in relation to the platform genre. Not only that Mario is a character that has managed to be an attraction in various different game genres other than platformers.

There are games such as the Mario Kart along with the Mario Party series which both originated in the 90’s that proves that Nintendo knows how to take character and use him in genres that were considered to be out of his element. We have seen other characters like Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot utilized in their own racing games such as Sonic R and Crash Bandicoot: Crash Team Racing such games have not reached the same levels of popularity as titles such as Super Mario Kart (1992), Mario Kart 64 (1996), Mario Kart 7 (2011) and most recently Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (2017). Mario is a character that can be utilized in almost any genre and still achieve a considerably decent amount of success. Also, it seems like Mario is more popular today than he was back in 80’s despite how much the landscape of gaming has changed with the rise in popularity of RPG’s and shooter video games. While saying Mario is the best video game character ever is a big of a stretch since everyone has their own preferences he is considered to be the biggest most recognizable name in the gaming world in general.
