Could Gley Lancer have been successful in arcade centers during the 90’s?

When it comes down to underrated side scrolling shooter titles of the early 90’s one of the many titles that instantly comes to mind is Gley Lancer. For those who do not know Gley Lancer was developed by a video game company known as Masada and was released exclusively In Japan for the Sega Mega Drive console back in 1992. Since its release Gley Lancer has been seen as one of the best side-scrolling shooters to have never been featured in arcade centers during the early 90’s. After all, we got to see games such as R-Type and Thunder Force III in arcade centers between the late 80’s-early 90’s time period.

While Gley Lancer was a solid side scrolling shooter game it never reached the same level of popularity as the R-Type series which started in 1987 or Thunder Force which began in ’83. There is no doubt that Gley Lancer has the potential to become a video game series but by the time it was released in ’92 the side scrolling shooter genre of gaming was starting to decline in popularity. While having Gley Lancer in arcade centers in the early 90’s would have sounded like a great idea in the theory the truth is it may have ended up being overshadowed by countless fighting and beat em up titles that emerged due that time such as Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, Final Fight and many others.
