When it comes down to the Mortal Kombat trilogy of the early 90’s many people had their preferences on which was the best out of the three games. But if we were to compare Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 to each other which title would be considered better? As far as visuals are concerned there is no doubt that the Mortal Kombat 2 title from ’93 had better graphics than its successor MK 3 which came out in 1995. Also, Mortal Kombat 2 saw the introduction of many new characters such as Shao Khan, Kintaro, Kitana, Milenna, Jade, Kung Lao, Jax along with the addition of Shang Tsung and Reptile becoming playable characters within in the game. Also, the arcade mode in Mortal Kombat 2 was arguably more challenging than what we saw in MK1 or MK3 depending on what level players attempted to complete the game on.
However, despite having inferior sprites in comparison to Mortal Kombat 2 there is no doubt that MK 3 had more superior gameplay. The addition of a combo system along with brutalities & animalities were features that made MK3 standout more from its past two predecessors from ’92-93. If Mortal Kombat 3 had similar sprites to that of MK 2 along with the same exact gameplay in relation to the combo system and everything else that was added to it could have been a perfect fighting title both at home and in arcade centers. In terms of which MK game from the early 90’s is debatable because both Mortal Kombat 2 & 3 stood out for different reasons. But in terms of which game was the more popular of the two Mortal Kombat 2 would most likely have the edge over MK3.
