As many people know the PlayStation 2 is currently the best selling game console of all-time. Since its initial release back in 2000 the PlayStation 2 has managed to sell over 155 million units worldwide and is considered to be one game console which help Sony gain the lead during the console wars in the early 00’s prior to the release of the Nintendo Wii in 2006. Many people argue that backwards compatibility was a feature that played a significant role in the success of the PlayStation 2 back in the early 2000’s.

To some extent backwards compatibility did help the PlayStation 2 become a major success during the 00’a but it most likely was not the main reason why the 128-bit console was largely successful during that time period. There were PS2 exclusive games such as Gran Theft Auto: Vice City along with Gran Turismo 3 & 4 which were huge attractions on the PS2 and managed to sell millions during the early to mid 2000’s. Despite, how successful some the top games were for the PlayStation 2 throughout the 00’s its hard to argue whether the console would have sold as much as it did without backwards compatibility.
