When we think about popular non Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat Fighting games of the early 90’s titles such as Fatal Fury Special along with Samurai Showdown II are considered to be classics that come to mind. In fact, next to the likes of King of Fighter ’98 those were probably two of the most popular titles that SNK had ever developed for the Neo Geo back in the early 90’s. Both Fatal Fury Special along with Samurai Showdown II had amazing 2D visuals and were challenging enough to make players spend countless quarters on both of them. As popular as both Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Showdown II were in arcade centers back in the 90’s it seemed like they were overshadowed by many other fighting games during that time period.

There were those who admired the blood and gore that was included in Samurai Showdown II. However, there were also many people who enjoyed the gameplay for Fatal Fury Special which had the plane system which added to the realism of the game itself. While fans of each game has their own opinions on which title was more popular they both felt like they were on the same level because they were both developed by SNK a company that was competing with more popular entities such as Capcom, Namco, etc. But while both gamers were almost equals in relation to popularity in arcade centers back in the 90’s it seems like Fatal Fury Special had more memorable characters. Fatal Fury Special had characters such as Gesse Howard, Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui who are more noticeable figures than anyone from Samurai Showdown II.
