Since the 80’s and throughout most of the 90’s we were used to seeing side scrolling Super Mario games since that’s all Nintendo pretty much gave us during those time periods. The only great isometric Mario game that really stands out from the past is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars which was initially released for the SNES back in March 1996. Even though, the Super Mario RPG game was developed by Square Enix it seems like Nintendo has not been too interested in applying the isometric perspective to most of their Mario games.

But when it came down to 2D Super Mario games they were often better off as side scrolling platformers especially since that’s how the first three games in the Super Mario Trilogy became very popular. While seeing more isometric Super Mario games would have been interesting for consoles such as the Super Nintendo or the Game Boy Advance it would not have contributed much to the overall appeal of them. Mario games general do great in sales on Nintendo consoles because the company always finds a way to reinvent themselves through creativity.
