The fighting genre of gaming was arguably at its peak in terms of popularity back in the 90’s. There were countless arcade games such as Marvel Super Heroes and Street Fighter Alpha 2 that were considered to be top-tier fighting titles by retro gamers from CPS-II era of gaming. Marvel Super Heroes was a not only innovative but it also included a star studded roster of characters that even casual gamers were familiar with.

Marvel Super Heroes included the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Magento, Captain America, Hulk, Psylocke, Thanos and others. Also, Marvel Super Heroes was the first game to include the use of the Infinity Gems during combat which was very creative. In fact, the use of the Infinity Gems in Marvel Super Heroes influenced the storyline and gameplay that we got in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. The arcade version of Marvel Super Heroes was praised by nun gaming publications during the mid 90’s for its amazing 2D graphics and its soundtrack.

However, despite how popular Marvel Super Heroes was in arcade centers of felt like Street Fighter Alpha 2 had the slight edge in terms of popularity. Street Fighter Alpha 2 not only had a bigger roster than Marvel Super Heroes but they also added some interesting characters which contributed to the overall appearance of the game itself. In Alpha 2 we got to see the introduction of Sakura Kasugano along with Rolento from the original Final Fight game.

In addition characters such as Akuma, Dan and Bison who were hidden in the first Street Fighter Alpha game were immediately available to choose from in this title. The graphics, gameplay along with the soundtrack made Street Fighter Alpha addictive in arcade centers and the game was eventually ported for multiple consoles such as the PS1, Sega Saturn and even the SNES. While Marvel Super Heroes arguably had superior visuals and even gameplay would probably give the edge to Street Fighter Alpha 2 in terms of overall success back in the mid 90’s.
