When it comes down tondo n to gaming involving Nintendo based consoles there is a first time for everything.  The Switch is probably first Nintendo console that was not created with a D-Pas for playing video games.  In some ways it kinda makes sense since Nintendo had seemed to do something innovative in comparison to the Wii-U.  But at this point we have seen all types of different designs for Nintendo controllers such as the one for the N64 and GameCube.  

If Nintendo ever does decide to make a D-Pad for the Nintendo Switch its starting price should at least be cheaper than the Joy Cons which are currently priced at $79.99 on average. But then again since players are able to use GameCube controllers on the Nintendo Switch there is probably no point on creating D-Pad for the console anyways.
