When it comes down to game consoles many people love game systems that are backwards compatible. We had consoles such as the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and others that made people want to purchase them since more games would be included on them. The only problem with consoles that are backwards compatible is that in some ways they devalue preceding game system. Even though the original Sony PlayStation was such a great console the PS2 is more powerful and gives players the option of playing both PS1 & PS2 titles. This could have been one of the many reasons why the PS2 had managed to sell over 155 million units worldwide on over a decade.
Ever since the Xbox 360 was released back in 2005 the console had managed to sell 84 million units worldwide not only because it was backwards compatible but because of hit games such as Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto V, Batman: Arkham City and more. Microsoft has also managed to make the Xbox One backwards compatible with many different games for the Xbox 360 which can play a significant role in people having more of a reason to purchase it over the PS4 for the time being.
Also, the Nintendo Wii had also managed to sell over 101 million units worldwide on over a decade since its release back in 2006. Along with being able to play various games for the Wii the console was fully backwards compatible with the Nintendo GameCube. While it can be argued that consoles that are backwards compatible does better in terms of worldwide sales the PlayStation 4 which is lacking that feature has managed to sell over 53 million units since its release in late 2013. Using PlayStation Now for the PS4 would allow people too access many of their favorite games from the 90’s and 00’s. However, the streaming service itself costs costs $19.99 which isn’t too bad. But since the cost of gaming is very expensive in this day and age some people might have problem with it.
