Shovel Night (1)

Since the start of the 10’s decade many people have been nostalgic about the 90’s along with 2D side scrolling titles such as the classic Sonic the Hedgehog series and Super Mario series. The  sprites and graphics utilized during the early 90’s was something that many people found appealing  and while there was nothing wrong the 2D side scrolling platform genre many people got bored by it for some reason.  When it comes down to classic 2D side scrolling titles the Shovel Knight series was something that was appealing to many retro gamers because most of the games were challenging despite how simplistic the design and the gameplay seemed back in the 90’s.

The Shovel Knight series was one that would have definitely thrived during the 16 bit era of gaming.   The fact that Shovel Knight has turned heads during the 10’s shows that the 2D side scrolling genre is still popular during the 10’s decade.  While 3D RPG’s along with first & third person shooter titles had remained popular for over the past decade the 2D side scroller had declined in terms of popularity.   If the 2D side scrolling genre made a return on a console such as the Nintendo Switch it would probably be better in both theory and practice.   The essential focus in terms of gaming for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 includes the RPG along with the first & third person shooter genre.    In terms of sales and popularity 2D side scrolling titles such as Sonic Mania would probably do better on the Nintendo Switch since it appeals to children than adults.   If the 2D side scrolling genre were to be revived it would most likely be on Nintendo based consoles as opposed to Xbox One or the PlayStation 4.
