Its hard to believe that its been 20 years since Scarface: The World Is Yours came out on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. There are many people who are likely unfamiliar with Scarface: The World Is Yours because it got got overshadowed by countless classics that appeared on the PS2 console during the mid-2000’s. The Scarface: The World Is Yours based off of the 1983 movie and the story of the game was pretty much a non-canon sequel to the film itself. The Scarface movie from ’83 saw the main protagonist Tony Montana and his crew getting killed in the end by Alejandro’s Sosa’s henchmen after his mansion gets invaded in the shootout scene. The original 80’s Scarface left a grim yet tragic tone seeing how Tony Montana had it all and pretty much lost everything in the end. Scarface: The World Is Yours felt like an alternate universe where the actual movie had a good ending opposed to a bad one. Scarface:The World Is Yours focused on Tony Montana rebuilding his criminal empire after his business relationship with Sosa collapses and his mansion is attacked by his henchmen. In this game Tony Montana has to start from scratch in rebuilding his criminal empire after his assets are seized by the feds. Also, Tony Montana was forced to live in exile for a couple of months after losing everything in Scarface: The World Is Yours.

While trying to rebuild his fallen empire in Miami, Florida Tony Montana must engage in activities like money laundering along with purchasing businesses as a front for his drug operations. Scarface: The World Is Yours also sees Tony expanding his turf and regaining dominance in different districts of Miami from rival gangs including the Diaz Brothers. The gameplay for Scarface: The World Is Yours felt like Grand Theft Auto from the open-world exploration all the way down to the third-person shooting mechanics. The mission progression setup along with most wanted police confrontations felt similar to that of the Grand Theft Auto series which was hot during the 2000’s. The release of Scarface: The World Is Yours was somewhat surprising considering the fact we got Grand Theft Auto: Vice City back in 2002 which was loosely based off the movie from 1983.

What made Scarface: The World Is Yours special is that the game was based off of an actual movie opposed to having made up video game protagonists similar to what we saw in the GTA series. Even though, Scarface: The World Is Yours did not sell nearly as much as GTA; Vice City from ’02 it still managed to be a commercial success reaching over two million copies in sales within two years. Scarface: The World Is Yours was developed by Radical Entertainment and published by the now defunct Vivendi Games and is considered an underrated video game relic from the mid-2000’s. Its widely believed that if Scarface: The World Is Yours came out before Grand Theft Auto : Vice City it probably would have sold millions more than it did. Scarface: The World is Yours was a pretty cool game in retrospect but unfortunately it came out a little too late.
