Its crazy to believe that the first Luigi’s Mansion title for Nintendo GameCube came out 25 years ago. The original Luigi’s Mansion came out on Nintendo’s sixth-generation console and was Luigi’s first high profile solo game where he was featured as the main protagonist. The cool thing about Luigi’s Mansion was that Nintendo tried to give the game its own identity opposed to being a basic 3D platformer. Luigi’s Manision was seen more as a dark action-adventure puzzle title that felt like Nintendo’s version of Ghostbusters for kids. In Luigi’s Mansion players had to explore a haunted mansion in order to rescue which was a basic yet interesting plot. Luigi’s Manision had around seventeen floors and the main antagonist in the game was King Boo. The dark atmosphere in Luigi’s Mansion was a stark contrast to what Nintendo gave us in 2002 with Super Mario: Sunshine which was bright and colorful.

When Luigi’s Mansion was released it came out days after the tragic 9/11 terrorist attacks on America on September 14th, 2001 . September 2001 was quite possibly one of the darkest time periods in American history. Luigi’s Mansion was considered to be one of Nintendo’s most darkest titles from the GameCube era because how creepy and unsettling it was. If anything Luigi’s Mansion came out during a time where everything in America felt pitch black which is kind very chilling to say the least. Despite, the tragic events that occurred back in September 2001 Luigi’s Mansion still ended up being a commercial success. Luigi’s Mansion ended up being the fifth best-selling video game on GameCube reaching over 3.3 million copies in sales. Luigi’s Mansion not only became a cult classic over the past two years but it also spawned two successful sequels.

The original Luigi’s Mansion game could have possibly have sold more if the GameCube console was not a commercial failure. It was nice to see Nintendo put some spotlight on Luigi during the early 2000’s mainly because he had spend a majority of the 80’s and 90’s in Mario’s shadows in older video games. Some believe that if Luigi’s Mansion made its debut on the N64 it would have sold more because of how popular the console was during the mid to late 90’s. Luigi’s Mansion is considered to be iconic because it was one of Nintendo’s first major horror-themed video games that kids could get into. Nintendo found a way to make a spooky kids game without being absolutely terrifying. If anything Luigi’s Mansion should have been saved for October 2001 especially since that was the month Halloween. Luigi’s Mansion was pretty cool game when it came out 25 years ago and many people believe its still a fun game today.
