Its hard to believe that Ristar came out on the Sega Genesis 30 years ago. Ristar is one of those platformers that does not get enough credit. RIstar shined during a time period where household names like Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and Donkey Kong dominated the 90’s in relation to that particular the platform genre. Ristar had around fourteen different levels across six planets and was filled with creativity. The intro for Ristar was far better than anything you would see in any of the original Sonic games and the animations, sprites and level designs were alluring. Ristar also had memorable soundtracks like “Break Silence” which showed players how epic the sound system for the Sega Genesis was. The story for the game was pretty basic and revolved around Ristar saving the Valdi System from the main antagonist Kaiser Greedy.

In the game Greedy was responsible for corrupting planet leaders and enslaving their populace while being able the capture Ristar’s father who was considered the legendary hero at the time. The game had no official setting so it was unclear what year Ristar was set in but the game was designed to be purely fictional. The story for Ristar was basic enough for children to understand and was addictive enough to a point where people did not care. Despite, not being a massive commercial success Ristar had managed to gain a cult following over the past few decades. Ristar is one of those Sega games that many people feel deserved direct sequel. Despite, Ristar appealing to niche audience of gamers back in the 90’s a sequel or even a remake for Ristar could possibly be a commercial success if done properly. Ristar was an IP that Sega could have done more with on consoles like Sega Saturn or even Dreamcast back in the 90’s.
