Its hard to believe that its been over two decades since Capcom released Resident Evil 0. One of the reasons why Resident Evil 0 stands out within its series was because it appeared on Nintendo GameCube which was something that was unexpected at the time. Most of the Resident Evil games from the 90’s appeared on the PS1 because the console appealed more to adults than it did children. Originally, Resident Evil 0 was actually supposed to be released for the Nintendo 64 but Capcom decided to go with GameCube due to the limitations of the 64-bit console. Resident Evil 0 was a rather interesting entry to series because it served as the prequel to the original RE game from 1996. The main character in Resident Evil 0 is S.T.A.R.S officer Rebecca Chambers who is the deuteragonist in Resident Evil 1. The main deuteragonist in Resident Evil 0 is an escaped convict named Billy Coen who collaborates with Rebecca in trying to discover the origins of the T-virus on an Umbrella Corp. train. The main antagonists of Resident Evil 0 are Dr. James Marcus who crated the T-virus and Queen Leach. Resident Evil 0 was a game that some fans of the series saw as underrated while others believed it was too difficult.

The inventory management in Resident Evil 0 was insane and was quite possibly the most challenging thing about the game itself. Unlike, entries that came before Resident Evil 0 Capcom decided to make inventory management more unforgiving by removing item boxes and penalizing players for carrying heavy artillery. While it was cool that you can as both Rebecca and Billy trying to manage both their inventories simultaneously when they split up was a nightmare to some people. The cutscenes, graphics and voiceover acting were all great by early 2000’s standards especially for the Nintendo GameCube. The gameplay was decent even though there were some awkward moments when dealing with zombies. While shooting at zombies they appear to be slow and sluggish opposed to being aggressive. In games like Dying Light the zombies are more difficult to kill in the dark due to the day and night cycle which adds more realism to the game.

The ending of Resident Evil 0 provided players with a cliffhanger with Billy Coen disappearing into the woods and Rebecca heading into a mansion setting up the events for Resident Evil 1. Billy is not seen again until Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles which came out back in 2007. Resident Evil 0 only managed to sell roughly over one million copies on the GameCube console while the HD Remastered version of the game from 2016 sold over 4.7 million copies worldwide. Resident Evil 0 is a game that often gets overshadowed in relation to the 00’s mainly due the success of Resident Evil 4 from 2005. Even though, Rebecca Chambers was in the original RE video game she was not nearly as popular Leon S. Kennedy. Billy Coen kinda became an afterthought after Resident Evil 0 with most casual being unfamiliar with him in general. Resident Evil 0 overall was a not really a bad game but it did fail to achieve the same level of success as other mainline entries within the series.
